Scituate is nestled on a gentle curve of coast overlooking
the Atlantic Ocean from four majestic cliffs. Miles of soft sandy
beaches invite residents to enjoy the bracing effect of the sun
warmed surf as it breaks on the shoreline, while salt marshes,
reflecting the brilliant light polished colors of the seasons,
provide an ideal setting for relaxing nature walk.
A picturesque sheltered harbor, guarded by a 19th century lighthouse,
is home to the town's fishing fleet and, during the spring, summer
and early autumn, provides excellent mooring for pleasure craft.
Rich in history, Scituate's past is a colorful patchwork of events
from Indian wars and heroic participation in the war of 1812
to a long and proud heritage of shipbuilding along the North
River. Settled in the 1630's by adventurers from England known
as the "Men of Kent," Scituate was originally the home
of the Wampanoag Indians who called their land "Satuit"
for the "cold
brook" that flows into the harbor.
The role of history, the dominance of the sea and an environment
naturally conclusive to recreation combine to make Scituate a
pleasant community offering many amenities.
Located 25 miles south of Boston, Scituate is accessible to the
city via two major highways. commuter buses and commuter boat
service from nearby Hingham and Hull. Rapid transit service connections
and parking are located 25 minutes from the town in Braintree,
Quincy and Rockland.
Scituate has three elementary schools, one junior high and one
high school offering a variety of innovative and standard programs
including work study, special education for the emotionally disturbed
and physically handicapped, and adult education. Residents take
great pride in the outstanding accomplishments of student athletes
participating in school sports programs. Eighty percent of the
town's high school graduates go on to higher education. Other
schools located in Scituate are Cushing Hall, a residential school
for boys with special needs, and a Montessori Community School.
Scituate is rapidly becoming a cultural center on the South Shore.
The critically acclaimed Prelude Concert Series features major
performers from the world of classical music in four concerts
each season, while local amateur musicians provide outstanding
entertainment through the Choral
Arts Society and the Pro Arte Singers. The Scituate Arts Association
sponsors a popular Arts Festival in the summer and offers courses
throughout the year. Members exhibit their works in the association's
Gallery located at Scituate Harbor.
For those who enjoy outdoor recreation, Situate has three golf
courses, tennis courts, salt water fishing boats, yacht clubs
and playgrounds. Two town forests, a state park and smaller town
trails invite cross-country skiing, hiking and jogging. In the
winter bonfires glow at the edge of ponds as skaters glide to
and fro. A summer carnival and the annual Heritage Days Celebration
are highlights of the town's warm weather activities.
